WNBA Sportsmanship and Community Assist awards announced

As the WNBA season comes to a close, the league has announced the winners of the prestigious 2023 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award and the season-long WNBA Cares Community Assist Award. Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner has been honored with the Community Assist Award for her tireless efforts in advocating for the safe repatriation of unjustly detained individuals abroad and her dedication to uplifting marginalized communities in Phoenix.

Griner expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am grateful to the WNBA for this recognition, but my deepest appreciation goes to the X-factor fans, fans across the league, and our Phoenix Mercury organization, who joined forces this year to make a meaningful impact through my Heart and Sole Shoe Drive and Bring Our Families Home initiative.” Griner further added, “I recognize the immense opportunity, privilege, and responsibility I have to change lives, and I am committed to that cause.”

As part of the award, the WNBA will donate $20,000 to charities chosen by Griner, including the organizations Bring Our Families Home and the Phoenix Rescue Mission.

The WNBA also recently announced that Elizabeth Williams, center for the Chicago Sky, has been named the recipient of the esteemed 2023 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented annually to a player who exemplifies the highest standards of sportsmanship on and off the court, including ethical behavior, fair play, and integrity.

Williams expressed her humility upon receiving the award, stating, “I am incredibly humbled to be named the recipient of the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award this year. Kim displayed the utmost respect for the game through her competitive spirit and her commitment to making a positive impact in her local community. Her legacy lives on, and I am honored to be in the company of past winners such as Sylvia Fowles, Nneka Ogwumike, Swin Cash, and many others. All of these remarkable women have demonstrated resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship both on and off the court. It is truly a privilege to receive this honor.”
