LAS VEGAS – Sadibou Sy had high expectations for Sean Strickland in the UFC middleweight title fight.
In a shocking upset, Strickland dethroned Israel Adesanya to claim the middleweight title at UFC 293. Sy, who trained extensively with Strickland and holds the 2022 PFL welterweight title, played a pivotal role in each other’s preparation.
Therefore, Sy was not surprised by Strickland’s impressive performance.
“I’ve stated it numerous times: Sean’s performance didn’t astonish me in any way,” Sy said during a media scrum at Xtreme Couture. “I’m incredibly happy and proud of him. He’s one of my primary training partners. In fact, I just sparred with him before coming here. We aid each other’s growth. I’m excited to continue evolving with him.”
On Nov. 23, at The Anthem in Washington D.C., Sy (16-6-2 MMA, 10-4-2 PFL) will have an opportunity to avenge his semifinals loss to Magomed Magomedkerimov by having a rematch in the welterweight final at the 2023 PFL Championships. This event will be streamed live on ESPN+ PPV.
Sy’s journey to the finals featured two spectacular finishes – a brutal knee strike to Jarrah Al-Silawi’s body and a sensational wheel kick knockout against Shane Mitchell. He secured his place against Magomedkerimov with a split decision victory over Carlos Leal.
