In an anticipated move, the Washington Commanders have officially announced several roster changes. LB Cody Barton, who suffered a high-ankle sprain, and Saahdiq Charles, dealing with a calf injury, have both been placed on injured reserve. This decision comes after both players were ruled out of the game yesterday against the Giants. To fill the void, the Commanders have elevated Jabril Cox from the practice squad, primarily for special teams duties and to provide depth at linebacker. Jamin Davis will be joined by David Mayo and Khaleke Hudson to replace Barton’s role on defense.
With Charles sidelined, the offensive line will undergo some modifications as the team prepares to face the Philadelphia Eagles. Chris Paul, Ricky Stromberg, and Nick Gates are potential options if Tyler Larsen starts at center. Although the coaching staff has yet to disclose their plans, it’s highly likely that multiple changes will be made to mitigate the impact of Charles’ absence.
DT Phidarian Mathis, who returned to practice on Wednesday, has now been cleared to play after the team activated him from injured reserve. He participated fully in practice throughout the week, despite being listed as questionable. Mathis, whose rookie season was cut short due to a knee injury, also suffered a calf injury during the preseason, causing him to miss seven games this year. His return adds depth to Washington’s defensive line, following Efe Obada’s comeback two weeks ago.
Furthermore, the Commanders have signed FB/TE Alex Armah from the practice squad. Armah previously made an appearance in the Week 3 game against the Buffalo Bills, primarily contributing on special teams. Head coach Ron Rivera has commended his performance in that area, indicating that it will likely be his role for the team in the immediate future.
The Reserve/Injured List welcomes LB Cody Barton and G Saahdiq Charles, while we implement various other roster adjustments. ⤵️
