GAME 1 RECAP: Detroit Red Wings’ stumbles after ‘great start’ a needed lesson in discipline
Game notes: The Red Wings will look to rebound from their season-opening loss on the road against the New Jersey Devils as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning for the home opener.
Game 1 of the season was a hard-fought battle, and new addition Alex DeBrincat scored a remarkable goal on a power play shot to tie the game at 2-2 in the third period. However, the Red Wings couldn’t overcome two goals from the Devils in the third period. Captain Dylan Larkin had an impressive assist and recorded six shots on goal in his season debut.
The Wings face a tough challenge in getting their first points of the year against the Lightning. Tampa Bay, despite being eliminated in the first round last year, still possesses a formidable team that had back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. For Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, it’s a chance to closely observe and compare his current team with the one he helped build during his time at Tampa Bay.
Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde confirmed that Robby Fabri (undisclosed) will not be available on Saturday, but could potentially make a return on Monday. Ville Husso is expected to start in net once again after making 23 saves on Thursday.
