Shanahan like ‘a kid in a candy store’ coaching McCaffrey originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
SANTA CLARA — According to San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, Christian McCaffrey has the mentality of a player who would never be the last one picked for a football team.
Shanahan described McCaffrey as a hardworking overachiever who just wants to be on the team. He compared McCaffrey to those dedicated gym rats who continuously put in the effort to improve.
Shanahan himself had personal experience with this mentality when he tried to establish himself as a wide receiver in college. Although he was not highly successful, he learned from it and pursued a career in coaching instead.
Shanahan acknowledged how rare it is for a player with the level of talent that McCaffrey possesses to also have the mindset of an undrafted free agent.
McCaffrey, on the other hand, expressed his gratitude to be part of Shanahan’s offense and credited it with teaching him more about the game. He described the experience as being like a kid in a candy store. Shanahan emphasized McCaffrey’s unique combination of talent and love for the game.
It’s evident that Shanahan and McCaffrey share a common passion for football, and their collaboration on the field promises to be exciting to watch.
