Scranton Prep continues to dominate in girls tennis, while Abington Heights saw their season come to an end. The Classics’ powerhouse lineup of Alyssa Wigley, Lily Lengyel, and Emma Cuck emerged victorious in the PIAA Class 2A opening round against Moravian Academy. Scranton Prep, the Lackawanna League and District 2 Class 2A champion, is now heading to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season against Sewickley Academy. This upcoming match will be a highly anticipated rematch from last year’s tournament, where Sewickley Academy narrowly defeated Scranton Prep.
Alyssa Wigley, a key player for Scranton Prep, delivered a hard-fought victory against Moravian Academy’s Francesca Bartolacci, the District 11 singles champion. This win marked Wigley’s third state singles match triumph in her career. Lily Lengyel, a freshman, also played exceptionally, earning her first state match win against Laura Li. Emma Cuck, at No. 3 singles, started off strong for the Classics, securing an impressive win over Penelope Blomfield.
In the Class 3A match, Abington Heights showcased their talent with wins from Susan Arp and Sona Hanumali in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. However, Central Dauphin’s depth proved to be too much for the Lady Comets as they triumphed in No. 3 singles and swept the doubles matches in straight sets.
Despite the loss, Abington Heights’ Susan Arp, Sona Hanumali, and Mary Booth will be competing in the upcoming PIAA Class 3A tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club on November 3.
Overall, Scranton Prep and Abington Heights displayed their exceptional skills throughout the tournament, making for an exciting and memorable season.
