Ross Stripling opts into Giants contract, won’t test free agency – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Ross Stripling Commits to Giants for 2024 MLB Season

In an exciting development, veteran right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling has chosen to remain with the San Francisco Giants for the 2024 MLB season. Fueled by his commitment to the team, Stripling has decided to opt into the remaining two years of his $25 million contract. KNBR’s Danny Emerman broke the news on Friday night, underscoring the pitcher’s dedication to the organization.

Stripling’s player option for 2024 will guarantee him a handsome salary of $12.5 million.

Bringing back Stripling ensures the Giants maintain a seasoned presence in their already stacked starting rotation. While Stripling faced challenges and battled injuries early in the season, he ultimately proved his worth in a bullpen role. With 11 starts under his belt in the previous season, his performance was marked by a 5.36 ERA in 89 innings pitched, with an impressive 70 strikeouts to only 16 walks in 22 combined appearances as a starter and reliever.

Despite pitching significantly fewer innings than the Giants’ ace Logan Webb, Stripling tied him for the team lead in home runs allowed, with 20.

Stripling’s decision to opt in comes as no surprise. He openly acknowledged his subpar performance after a disappointing season that ended with him on the injured list. The pitcher admitted to reporters that his lackluster showing made it unlikely for him to secure a larger contract in free agency, hinting that he intended to remain with the Giants.

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has made it clear that the organization’s focus this offseason is to acquire top-of-the-rotation starting pitchers rather than relying on back-end depth options like Stripling and Sean Manaea from the previous year. Although it remains to be seen what role Stripling will fill next season, the experienced right-hander has the potential to make an impact as either a bulk-innings pitcher or in occasional spot-start situations for San Francisco.
