Robert Whittaker hopes Kamaru Usman stays at middleweight, would love to fight him

Robert Whittaker expresses his interest in a potential fight against Kamaru Usman.

Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) faced defeat in his middleweight debut when he lost a majority decision to Khamzat Chimaev on short notice at UFC 294. Despite a valiant comeback in the later rounds, Usman fell short of victory.

Whittaker (25-7 MMA, 15-5 UFC) commended Usman’s performance and encouraged the former UFC welterweight champion to continue competing in the middleweight division. Whittaker welcomes the opportunity to face Usman inside the octagon.

During an episode of the MMArcade Podcast, Whittaker stated, “I am pleased that the Chimaev and Usman fight took place. It adds to the excitement at the top level of the sport. It introduces new challenges among the elite fighters. What lies in Usman’s future? Will he remain in the middleweight division? I’m uncertain. Regardless, I find that fight intriguing. I’m willing to face a middleweight Usman.”

Similar to Usman, Whittaker is aiming for a comeback. Following his TKO loss to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290 in July, the former UFC middleweight champion believes that someone of Usman’s caliber should be competing against the best in the division.

“I don’t view it as a bad matchup,” Whittaker continued. “Should Usman be forced to climb the rankings by facing fighters ranked 30-20? As a consecutive defending welterweight champion, he deserves to challenge the elite contenders in the middleweight division.

“It remains to be seen how he will fare, but fresh blood at the top level of the sport is captivating. It piques my interest. With Chimaev and Strickland entering the mix, it shakes things up. I find it exhilarating. I hope he decides to stay. Stick around, Usman. It’s an exciting journey up here, mate.”
