Rising Japanese UFC star Tatsuro Taira gets next assignment in Carlos Hernandez

Rising Japanese flyweight sensation Tatsuro Taira is making waves in the UFC and is set to continue his impressive journey on the promotion’s upcoming card in Shanghai, China.

Taira, with a spotless record of 14-0 in MMA and 4-0 in UFC, will be facing off against Carlos Hernandez (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a three-round clash at Mercedes-Benz Arena on December 9th. Though the card’s main event is yet to be announced, this matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter.

The news of this fight has been confirmed by two sources who chose to remain anonymous until the official announcement is made by the promotion. The matchup was initially reported by Eurosport NL.

Despite experiencing three fight cancellations during his time with the UFC since signing in early 2022, Taira, who is undefeated both as a professional and amateur, remains active and eager to step into the cage. This fight will mark his fifth appearance in just 19 months.

Taira has already showcased his skills in the promotion with wins over Carlos Candelario, CJ Vergara, Jesus Aguilar, and Edgar Chairez. He was scheduled to return on October 14th against David Dvorak, but the latter withdrew, leading to Taira’s removal from the card.

Carlos Hernandez made his UFC debut in February 2022, securing a split decision victory against Victor Altamirano. Following a submission loss in his second bout against Allan Nascimento, Hernandez bounced back in June with a technical decision win over Denys Bondar. The fight ended with Hernandez unintentionally clashing heads with Bondar, resulting in a knockout that went to the judges’ scorecards.

The UFC Shanghai event lineup currently includes:

  • Andre Muniz vs. Jun Yong Park

  • Nasrat Haqparast vs. Jamie Mullarkey

  • Carlos Hernandez vs. Tatsuro Taira

  • Brendson Ribeiro vs. Mingyang Zhang

  • Su Mudaerji vs. Allan Nascimento
