Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser is making a name for himself in a different field. After a 10-year career in hockey, DeKeyser has transitioned into real estate and is now working as a real estate agent for Saros Real Estate. He recently showed off a stunning $1.2 million waterfront home in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, a property listed by his realty company.
While enjoying a plate of tacos at Zef’s Dockside Bar and Kitchen, DeKeyser discussed his decision to venture into real estate at the age of 33. After injuries and a stint with the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, DeKeyser faced the possibility of retirement. He consulted with his wife, Melissa, who supported his decision.
DeKeyser reflected on the challenges of transitioning from a professional hockey player to a real estate agent. He acknowledged the uncertainty and the need to adapt to a new path. Despite the difficulties, he draws from his past experiences of overcoming obstacles, such as going undrafted out of Western Michigan University and then becoming one of the best defensemen for the Red Wings.
DeKeyser’s interest in real estate has always been there, and he often found himself browsing through the Zillow app and staying updated on the market. However, during his playing days, he didn’t have the time to pursue it further. Now that he has the opportunity, he took the necessary steps to obtain his real estate license. After completing a 40-hour class and passing the licensing exam, DeKeyser joined the team at Saros Real Estate Services in Grosse Pointe.
The transition from athlete to real estate agent comes with its challenges. DeKeyser learned the importance of being seen as serious and dedicated by potential clients. A chance encounter with former Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks, who also became a real estate agent, provided DeKeyser with valuable advice. Dirks emphasized the significance of building a reputable brand and having a supportive team, which led DeKeyser to Saros Real Estate Services.
Since starting his real estate career, DeKeyser has already made a few sales and assisted a client in purchasing a home. He acknowledges that building a client base is the most challenging part of the first year, but he is determined to succeed. DeKeyser’s focus is on providing excellent service to his clients and establishing himself as a reliable realtor, regardless of his past hockey accomplishments.
Although the worlds of hockey and real estate differ, DeKeyser finds similarities in the competitive nature of both fields. Just as he competed on the ice, he now competes in the real estate market by learning the best ways to secure and close deals. He’s eager to prove himself as one of the best real estate agents in the industry.
