WASHINGTON – Bilal Coulibaly, the 19-year-old rookie for the Washington Wizards, received news from head coach Wes Unseld Jr. that he would be starting in the team’s first preseason game. Coulibaly, however, felt no nervousness, only excitement.
Despite his impressive physical attributes, including height, wingspan, and athleticism, Coulibaly’s true strength lies in his ability to handle challenges with composure. He has seamlessly adjusted to living in a foreign country and playing in the NBA.
During the game against the Cairns Taipans, Coulibaly showcased his skills, scoring five points, grabbing six rebounds, and making three assists, steals, and blocks. Although the Taipans were overmatched, Coulibaly’s performance left a lasting impression.
Teammates and Unseld describe Coulibaly as mature, inquisitive, and adaptable. Despite being a rookie from France, he has seamlessly integrated into the team and dealt with major life changes.
Coulibaly has received support from his parents, as well as other French NBA players who have reached out to offer advice. He also works closely with the coaching staff, including assistant coach Brian Keefe and former NBA player Alexis Ajinça.
The Wizards have embraced Coulibaly, with teammate Jordan Poole even requesting to have lockers adjacent to each other. The team understands the potential Coulibaly possesses and will be patient with his development.
Coulibaly remains focused on improving his game and becoming the best version of himself. He handles the demands of his new life with composure, with the only challenge being the lack of a driver’s license, relying on others for transportation.
Overall, Coulibaly’s ability to handle the challenges and adjustments of his rookie season has impressed everyone within the organization.
