It seems that the Jackson Arnold era is set to begin for OU, as OU’s record-setting quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, appears to be heading to the transfer portal for his final season of eligibility.
Gabriel, after posting a message on X (formerly Twitter) thanking OU fans for the last two seasons, inferred that he was soon to make the move.
Gabriel threw for 3,660 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions this season, moving into the top 10 all-time in career passing yards and touchdown passes. He also became a key piece of the Sooners’ rushing attack, running for 373 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.
His decision was expected, as he had been talking about it being his final season, working to pass the torch to Arnold. Many, however, anticipated that he would make a run at the NFL after this season.
This season, Gabriel had his biggest moment against Texas, leading a late touchdown drive to lift the Sooners to a 34-30 win over the Longhorns.
When Jeff Lebby came aboard as Brent Venables’ offensive coordinator, he convinced Gabriel to join him in Norman. With Lebby recently hired as Mississippi State’s head coach, Gabriel may find his next destination there.
Now, the Sooners turn to the five-star freshman quarterback, Arnold, who saw limited action this season but was pressed into duty in the second half of the win over BYU. Arnold will be leading the Sooners in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28.
