Novak Djokovic’s remarkable winning streak was interrupted at the ATP Finals, courtesy of a phenomenal performance from emerging Italian talent Jannik Sinner.

Sinner, competing in front of a home audience at the ATP Finals in Turin, secured a dramatic 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 victory over Djokovic, after a thrilling 3 hour and 9 minute battle.

Despite facing intense opposition from the crowd, Djokovic managed to maintain his sense of humor, often encouraging the audience for more support.

Both players had been dominating the tour in recent months, with numerous titles to their names. However, their clash in the round-robin group at Turin marked their first encounter, with Sinner now taking the lead in his group after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in an earlier match.

The match showcased exceptional quality, with Djokovic hitting over 80mph on 80% of his forehands, an almost unprecedented feat. Sinner’s ability to hit the ball early allowed him to keep Djokovic under pressure, while also introducing variations in his game, highlighting his evolution as a player.

“I was really brave and I took my chance in important moments,” said Sinner, who continued to apply high-risk tennis even when the stakes were at their peak. This bold approach has been the only successful tactic to challenge players of Djokovic’s caliber, as demonstrated by Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

At 21, Sinner has shown potential in a similar vein to Alcaraz. Both players have posed as potential threats to Djokovic, with Sinner experiencing a late-season surge after a slow start, while Alcaraz’s momentum has waned since Wimbledon.

Djokovic’s next match will be against replacement player Hubert Hurkacz, following Tsitsipas’ withdrawal from the tournament due to injury.
