Notre Dame men’s basketball 2023-24 roster preview

SOUTH BEND — Markus Burton, the freshman guard for Notre Dame men’s basketball, has a unique story of defying expectations and surpassing barriers. From his outstanding high school career, where he became the all-time leading scorer in Penn High School and Northern Indiana Conference boys’ history, to his senior year where he averaged an impressive 30.3 points per game and became the first Indiana Mr. Basketball from the South Bend area since 1978, Burton has continuously proven himself. Despite being considered a minor mid-major prospect, Burton’s work ethic and determination earned him a scholarship to Notre Dame.

In an ideal college basketball world, Burton would spend his first year observing and learning the game, playing a reserve role while gaining strength and experience. However, due to a coaching change and a lack of experienced guards on the team, Burton finds himself in a prominent position. With seven guards on the Irish roster but only one true point guard, Burton has the opportunity to become the first freshman point guard to start the season opener for Notre Dame since 2001. Only three true freshmen have achieved this feat before, and Burton may join their ranks.

Burton’s transition to college life and basketball has been challenging but rewarding. Moving from high school to the competitive ACC conference has required adjustment, but Burton has adapted quickly and confidently. His natural ability, instincts, and decision-making have improved, and he has shown his teammates and coaches his potential to excel as a college guard.

Head coach Micah Shrewsberry had the choice to recruit a veteran point guard from the transfer portal but chose to put his faith in Burton instead. As the team prepares for their preseason showdown against Xavier, Burton may have the opportunity to showcase his skills and learn from the experience. Shrewsberry knows that Burton has the potential to accomplish great things and is dedicated to helping him improve every day.

While Burton’s starting position is ultimately up to Coach Shrewsberry, Burton is committed to working hard and doing everything he can to earn it. As he continues to grow and develop as a player, Burton’s name may soon be solidified in the starting lineup.
