Doug Kalitta is no stranger to this path. However, he’s hoping for a different outcome this time around.
The upcoming milestone on this journey is the Texas NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas.
This 59-year-old NHRA Top Fuel Dragster driver, originally from Michigan, has emerged as the frontrunner in the Countdown to the Championship—the NHRA playoffs. Despite being winless since 2020 and finishing sixth in the regular-season standings, a staggering 353 points behind regular-season champion Justin Ashley, Kalitta has made an impressive comeback.
Since the points reset for the Countdown, Kalitta has secured victories at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania, and in Charlotte, propelling him to the top of the championship standings. He currently holds a 47-point lead over Leah Pruett and a 51-point lead over four-time Top Fuel champion Steve Torrence.
Kalitta’s recent win at Maple Grove marked his 50th career victory, making him the winningest NHRA nitro driver without a championship title.
