Netflix to launch first ever live sports event with ‘Netflix Cup’ golf tournament

CNN Drivers, get ready because Netflix is making its debut in the live sports arena by hosting a unique event that pits Formula One drivers against PGA Tour players in a golf tournament. Dubbed “The Netflix Cup,” the event will be streamed live from Wynn Golf Club near the Las Vegas strip on November 14. This exciting competition combines two of Netflix’s flagship sporting docuseries, “Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing.” Four F1 drivers – Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Alex Albon, and Pierre Gasly – will compete against four professional golfers – Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas.

“We are thrilled to bring together global stars from these popular hits for our first-ever live sports event,” said Gabe Spitzer, Vice President of Nonfiction Sports at Netflix. The tournament will feature four pairs, each consisting of a golfer and a driver, competing in eight-hole matches. The two best-performing teams will advance to the final hole to contend for the prestigious Netflix Cup trophy.

Wynn Golf Club, known for hosting live events such as “The Match” in 2021, where Brooks Koepka triumphed over Bryson DeChambeau, will provide the perfect backdrop for this thrilling competition. The announcement of the Netflix Cup coincides with the news that several high-profile athletes, including golfer Rory McIlroy, are set to invest in Alpine’s F1 team. Otro Capital, a private investment firm, revealed their €200 million ($211.4m) “strategic investment” into the Renault Group-owned team, along with the addition of various sports stars to their investment group.

Joining McIlroy in this venture are NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, boxer Anthony Joshua, footballers Trent-Alexander Arnold and Juan Mata, as well as Eberg Capital founder Roger Ehrenberg. McIlroy expressed his excitement, stating, “Partnering with Otro Capital in Alpine F1 is an exhilarating venture that unites my love for sports, competition, and the relentless drive to be the best.” Kelce added, “Our shared passion for excellence and innovation forms the cornerstone of this partnership.”

Liverpool and England star Alexander-Arnold also shared his enthusiasm for the investment, saying, “Having been to Formula 1 races as a fan, I love the high-pressure environment of the paddock, and I’ve seen firsthand how incredibly impressive the Alpine team is.” With only five races left in the 2023 F1 season, Alpine, led by Gasly and Esteban Ocon, currently holds the sixth position in the constructors championship among 10 teams.

The combination of F1 and golf in the Netflix Cup promises to be a unique and thrilling event for sports fans worldwide. Stay tuned for this captivating showdown that showcases the talents of both drivers and golfers as they compete for glory on the course.
