ANN ARBOR – Mia Melendez excels under pressure. Her competitive resilience sets her apart as one of the top golfers at Ann Arbor Greenhills.
When faced with crucial moments, Melendez always delivers. This was evident during the final round of the MHSAA Division 4 state finals, where she tied for the lead with Logan Bentley. Determined to secure her third consecutive individual state title, Melendez elevated her game.
On the 17th hole, Melendez surprised herself by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt. With a par on the 18th hole, she sealed her victory by two strokes. This remarkable performance solidified her status as one of Michigan’s best golfers.
Reflecting on her success, Melendez stated, “That birdie putt was a huge moment for me. It showcased my competitive spirit and reminded me of my great abilities.”
This was not the first time Melendez needed an extraordinary shot to claim a state title. In her freshman year, she secured her championship with a clutch chip shot. Last season, she birdied the 16th hole and won the state title by one stroke. These high-pressure moments are what Melendez lives for.
Emphasizing her confidence, Melendez stated, “Knowing that I can pull off amazing shots when I need them allows me to play more strategically during tournaments. I trust that my abilities will shine through in the end.”
Throughout her prep career, Melendez has consistently performed at her best. With her recent victory, she joins the elite group of 12 MHSAA golfers who have won three consecutive state titles.
Looking ahead, Melendez has her sights set on an even more extraordinary accomplishment. If she secures another state title next season, she will become the fourth golfer overall, and the first from the lower peninsula, to win four individual state titles.
