“Welcome to the highly anticipated first-quarter edition of the NHL Awards! We can hardly believe that the holiday season is upon us already, and with a full quarter of the NHL season behind us, it’s time to recognize some standout players worthy of some well-deserved praise.
Starting off with the Hart Trophy, this year’s candidates are extremely impressive, but it’s shocking that the talented Connor McDavid isn’t being considered. Nonetheless, history seems to be repeating itself with Nikita Kucherov, who is playing even better than when he won the Hart Trophy in 2019. Leading the NHL in points, scoring chances, and shots on goal, Kucherov has been dominating his opponents and making a strong case for himself.
On the defensive side, Quinn Hughes has been nothing short of outstanding, leading the league’s defensemen with his superb speed, agility, and playmaking abilities. He’s been instrumental in the Vancouver Canucks’ great start to the season, making him a strong contender for the Hart Trophy.
These two exceptional players have set the league on fire with their performances, but the award is still very much up for grabs. William Nylander, David Pastrnak, Cale Makar, and Nathan MacKinnon are also giving them a run for their money, making it an exciting race to watch.
Moving on to the Norris Trophy, Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar are neck and neck in the scoring race, showcasing their incredible offensive and defensive skills. However, with several other impressive defensemen in the mix, such as Drew Doughty, Jaccob Slavin, and Erik Karlsson, this year’s ballot for the Norris Trophy is stacked with talent.
As for the Vezina Trophy, the race remains extremely tight, with remarkable performances from Thatcher Demko, Adin Hill, and Ilya Sorokin. With exceptional stats and impressive on-ice performances, this award is truly anyone’s for the taking.
The Selke Trophy undoubtedly belongs to Aleksander Barkov, who has been an absolute force on both ends of the ice for the Florida Panthers. Jordan Staal and Michael McLeod are also in the running, but Barkov’s all-around brilliance clearly sets him apart.
The Calder Trophy, on the other hand, seems to have a clear frontrunner in Connor Bedard, whose outstanding rookie season has made him a standout player in the league. With a significant gap between him and other rookies, Bedard is undoubtedly the one to watch in this category.
Lastly, the Jack Adams Award, which is traditionally awarded to the coach who defies expectations, seems to be leaning heavily towards Rick Tocchet for his remarkable work with the Vancouver Canucks. Providing the team with a solid structure and turning them into a formidable contender, Tocchet has certainly earned his place in the conversation.
