Knicks taking it slow with Josh Hart but insist he’s healthy

NBA News: Knicks Taking Caution with Josh Hart’s Recovery

Published Oct. 12, 2023, 9:29 p.m. ET

The New York Knicks and Josh Hart clarify that his current slow progress in the preseason is a precautionary measure rather than a sign of injury. Hart represented the United States in the FIBA World Cup last month and is being carefully brought back to full strength. Although he didn’t participate in the team’s preseason opener, Hart practiced on Thursday and may play in the upcoming game against the Timberwolves at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

“I feel confident,” Hart stated. “I’m gradually increasing my workload and ensuring that I’m fully prepared when the time comes. This summer was exhausting for me, as it was my first time participating in the playoffs and unexpectedly joining FIBA. My body wasn’t accustomed to such a demanding schedule within a year. So, I’m just taking the necessary steps to recover.”

Hart emphasized the importance of listening to his body’s needs, a sentiment echoed by Coach Tom Thibodeau. The coaching staff isn’t overly concerned about Hart’s condition. They believe he is in good shape and are focusing on ensuring his long-term health.

“He participated in some practice today, but we didn’t have much contact. So, he managed to do most of it,” Thibodeau commented. “Considering his conditioning level, he is in good form. I’m optimistic about his progress. Our current approach is mostly precautionary.”

In a recent survey of NBA general managers, Jalen Brunson received votes when asked about current players who could potentially become exceptional head coaches in the future. Brunson expressed his interest in teaching the game after his playing career comes to an end.

“It’s very intriguing,” Brunson responded upon hearing about the poll. “I’m not sure at what level, but I would seriously consider coaching once I retire. We’ll see how things unfold.”

Chris Paul received the highest percentage of votes, with 20% of respondents favoring him. Brunson fell into the “also receiving votes” category, indicating recognition for his potential coaching abilities.

Although Miles McBride may not initially be part of the Knicks’ regular rotation this season, Coach Thibodeau remains a supporter of the young guard. Thibodeau advises McBride to stay prepared and assures him that everyone on the team will have opportunities throughout the season.

“Just stay ready,” Thibodeau advised McBride. “I observe him closely during practice, and I know that everyone receives their chance at some point. The key is to be prepared when that opportunity arises. I have great confidence in him because I witness his hard work every day. I see his continuous improvement, not only during practice but also in his pre-practice and post-practice routines, as well as film study.”
