Erik ten Hag pulled off an unexpected move for Manchester United during half-time against Brentford.
While the Dutchman undoubtedly criticized his players for their poor performance in the first half, he made the bold decision to substitute Casemiro, a key player from last season. Despite his impressive debut season at Old Trafford, there are now doubts about the Brazilian powerhouse ahead of a crucial upcoming game.
The much-anticipated derby against their treble-winning rivals is scheduled after the international break, on Sunday, October 29th (3.30pm). However, Casemiro’s place in the starting lineup for that match is far from certain.

In just a few chaotic days at Old Trafford, the former Real Madrid enforcer was sent off and then substituted, putting his previously guaranteed spot in the team at risk. It is noteworthy that his greatest impact this season has come in an unexpected role as a goal-scoring threat.
Casemiro is currently the top scorer for United this season, with four goals in all competitions. However, there is an obvious absence in his usual reliable defensive game.
“I wanted more football,” explained Ten Hag after replacing Casemiro with Christian Eriksen at half-time during the thrilling victory over Brentford. It was another midfielder, the underrated Scott McTominay, who stole the show with two stoppage-time goals that will be remembered in Premier League history.
“[I wanted] someone who brings passing, distribution, and link-up play,” Ten Hag further explained in his press conference. “So I decided to bring on Christian Eriksen to replace Casemiro.”
By saying very little, Ten Hag conveyed a lot. He made a bold decision to sacrifice Casemiro, his trusted player from last season, just a few months after he was considered indispensable.
