How far can they advance? Section V girls tennis players competing in state tournament

Can Leyla Tozin secure a high placement in her return to the state tennis tournament?

The talented Brighton junior will begin her first match in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Tennis Individual Championship tournament in Schenectady on Thursday with an impeccable 17-0 record. She previously achieved a fourth-place finish in the 2022 individual singles tournament.

Tozin had another dominant year in Section V. She secured her fourth consecutive title in Class A1 and successfully defended her state qualifiers single championship. Tozin emerged victorious against Emily Miller from Victor in both finals.

Tozin will be accompanied by her teammates Ella Hall and Samantha Kotz. The A1 doubles champions narrowly defeated Shu Shu Wu and Caroline Fitzsimmons from Pittsford Sutherland 7-5, 7-6(7-5) in their recent match. Their contribution played a crucial role in Brighton’s ninth consecutive section crown victory in Class A1.

The NYSPHSAA’s first round will commence on Thursday morning, while the championships for singles and doubles tournaments are scheduled for Saturday morning. Unfortunately, the draws for the NYSPHSAA tournament were not available as of Wednesday afternoon.

HAC’s Sophia Carling triumphs in a challenging qualifier

Sophia Carling, a senior at Harley Allendale Columbia, has consistently dominated Class B throughout her career. However, qualifying for states proved to be a tough challenge this year.

Carling experienced her sole loss in the state qualifiers tournament when she was defeated by Miller in the semifinals. Nevertheless, she demonstrated resilience and achieved a remarkable comeback by defeating Omika Patel from Pittsford Mendon in the third-place match with a score of 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(7-4).

Carling claimed her fourth consecutive Section V championship title in Class B1. She now has two opportunities to compete for a state title. Her undefeated HAC Wolves (14-0) secured a 5-0 victory against Lewiston Porter from Section VI in the regionals, allowing them to advance to the NYSPHSAA Team Championships next weekend.

Pittsford Mendon, the Section V Class A2 team champion who defeated Brighton in the crossover final, unfortunately lost to Williamsville East from Section VI in their region final with a score of 5-2 on Saturday.
