Francis Ngannou taking Tyson Fury ‘very seriously,’ not just showing up for payday

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Eric Nicksick acknowledges the criticism and discussions surrounding Francis Ngannou‘s venture into the world of boxing. However, Nicksick assures the critics that the former UFC heavyweight champion is driven by the desire to win and not just the prospect of a big payday.

As the head coach at Xtreme Couture, Nicksick witnesses Ngannou’s motivation and focus as he prepares for his monumental boxing match against WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury this Saturday. The two fighters will face off in a 10-round, non-title bout under professional boxing rules.

Nicksick believes Ngannou’s mindset is exactly where it needs to be for him to pull off one of the most significant upsets in combat sports history.

“He’s taking this endeavor very seriously, and although we don’t focus on reading comments or critics, we’re aware of them and they have motivated him to work even harder,” Nicksick shared with MMA Junkie. “Witnessing his dedication and the effort he has put into his training sessions, it’s evident that he is fully committed. You can’t approach this opportunity with a casual mindset and just think, ‘I’m just happy to be here and make some money.’

“I was discussing with the team how excited I am to see the progress Ngannou has made in boxing and how he can use that knowledge in future MMA fights.”

Ngannou is fulfilling a long-standing goal with Saturday’s fight. He has wanted to fight Fury for years, but contractual obligations with the UFC prevented the matchup.

In an unprecedented move, Ngannou parted ways with the UFC earlier this year after completing his contract as champion.

Nicksick expresses his extreme happiness and pride in Ngannou’s determination to seize this opportunity.

“I’m thrilled for him, and it’s remarkable to think that just four or five years ago, Francis was talking about this dream and aspiration. Now, we are only days away from it becoming a reality for him.”

He later added,

“It’s amazing to see your friend in the spotlight and being recognized with all the promotion and attention. They’ve done an excellent job, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
