Former UConn stars dominated the WNBA this year, with Breanna Stewart leading the pack as the MVP. However, it wasn’t just Stewart who had an incredible season. Her former Huskies teammate, Napheesa Collier, also had a standout year and they both earned First Team All-WNBA honors on Sunday.
Alyssa Thomas, the Connecticut Sun forward who finished second in MVP voting, was also selected for the first team. Joining them is A’ja Wilson, who plays for the Las Vegas Aces and finished third in MVP voting, as well as Satou Sabally from the Dallas Wings.
This is the first time Collier, Thomas, and Sabally have received first-team honors. Meanwhile, Stewart has made the team for the fourth consecutive year, and Wilson has achieved this honor three times.
Stewart, who secured her second MVP title in a historically close vote, had remarkable statistics throughout the season, averaging 23 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game. She led the New York Liberty to the WNBA Finals, where they won Sunday’s game, bringing the series against the Aces to 2-1 and forcing a Game 4.
Collier also had an outstanding performance, averaging 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Minnesota Lynx. She was named an All-Star for the third time. Thomas, on the other hand, contributed 15.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game, leading the Connecticut Sun to the playoff semifinals.
