In JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, the championship match of the Next Gen Finals is set to showcase top talent striving to make their mark on the tennis world. It will be a clash between Arthur Fils, the young prospect aiming to rejuvenate French tennis, and Hamad Medjedovic, representing Serbia’s hopes for continued success after Novak Djokovic.
On Saturday, the top-seeded Arthur Fils will face off against Hamad Medjedovic in the season-ending tournament for the top eight players aged 21 or under. Fils, aged 19, secured his spot in the final by defeating fellow Frenchman Luca Van Assche in a thrilling match. Meanwhile, Medjedovic, also 20, advanced to the final after Dominic Stricker retired due to a back injury during their semifinal match.
Notably, this is the first time the tournament is being held in Saudi Arabia, a departure from its usual location in Milan since its inception in 2017. Along with shorter sets, there are modifications to the standard tennis rules for the tournament, including shorter changeovers and reduced time on the shot clock for certain points.
Both Fils and the sixth-seeded Medjedovic impressively emerged undefeated in group play. With Fils ranked at No. 36 and Medjedovic at No. 110, the stage is set for an enthralling clash of rising stars.
Earlier this year, Fils made history as the youngest Frenchman in nearly two decades to clinch an ATP title when he triumphed at Lyon. On the other hand, Medjedovic, under the guidance of Serbia’s Davis Cup captain Viktor Troicki, achieved tour-level success in Gstaad and Astana, along with triumphs in lower-level Challenger events.
Previous champions of the Next Gen Finals include illustrious names such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz, adding further anticipation to this year’s title match.
