Exciting Changes in Leadership: Bruins Prepare for a New Era

Charlie McAvoy, along with David Pastrnak, is excited to take on the role of alternate captain for the B’s and start his own path as a leader for the future.

“Leaders don’t come in a one-size-fits-all package,” said McAvoy. “Each person has their own style. You can see it with [Zdeno Chara], [David Krejci], David Backes, and [Patrice Bergeron]. They all do it differently, and you have to be true to yourself every day.

“As I get older, I’m trying to define who I want to be. I’ve learned so much from these guys, and I want to take the best qualities from each of them. One thing they all have in common is that they treat everyone with respect. That’s something I want to emulate and prioritize.”

Pastrnak added that McAvoy’s listed leaders have done an excellent job of preparing them for their leadership roles.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to learn from them every day,” said Pastrnak. “I’m ready to step up and be a leader. We’ve seen Bergy and myself enter the league at a young age. I know it won’t be easy, and there will be challenges throughout the long season, but I’m excited for it.”

Boston coach Jim Montgomery acknowledged that it is now the time for Pastrnak and McAvoy to lead the team alongside Marchand.

“Marchy has been part of our core for a while. Charlie and Pasta have started to gain exposure to that role, but now it’s their team. It’s exciting for them,” said Montgomery. “They’ve learned from great players and leaders. We have other players like Lindholm, Carlo, Coyle, and Zacha who can support them. This is their team now, and I think we’ll see that excitement on display Wednesday night.”

McAvoy agreed with his coach, stating that “the next chapter of Bruins history will be written by us.”

“We all have something to prove, whether it’s me, Pasta, or Brando. None of us have won it all yet. We’ve come close and gained experience, but we need to determine what our legacy will be,” said McAvoy. “I’m grateful for the time I have here, and together, we’re going to build something great.”
