Despite a significant change in the Knicks’ second unit, the group has shown improvement early on.
Following the trade of Obi Toppin to the Pacers and the addition of guard Donte DiVicenzo, the second unit has seamlessly adapted, drawing attention to their chemistry on and off the court.
Last year’s bench unit outscored their opposition by 0.5 points per 100 possessions. In contrast, the current quintet of RJ Barrett, Isaiah Hartenstein, Josh Hart, Quickley, and DiVincenzo are dominating their matchups, outscoring opponents by 3.1 points per 100 possessions in just six games this season.
The newly formed second unit has been excelling in moving the ball well and maintaining a high assist percentage of 73.2.
Additionally, their rebounding performance, with a higher rebounding percentage than the starters’ rate last year, has been impressive at 52.3.
The group’s strength lies in its versatility, speed, and shotmaking ability, allowing a fast-paced game led by the four guards on the floor.
With individual players’ versatile capabilities, they can seamlessly switch positions on the court, ensuring a dynamic and high-energy game flow.
“I love how the pace of the game changes with the second unit,” Thibodeau said, highlighting the team’s powerful performance.
Despite Donte DiVincenzo’s slow start, his teammates have praised his overall contribution to the team, emphasizing his impact in various areas, including deflections, defensive persistence, and an unselfish approach to making plays.
“Him as well as ‘Quick’ are those spark plugs for us,” Barrett said, acknowledging DiVincenzo’s and Quickley’s pivotal roles within the team’s dynamics.
With their depth, versatility, and strong performance both in the starting five and the second unit, the Knicks have managed to maintain consistent pressure on opponents throughout their matchups, showcasing their potential as a force to be reckoned with in the league.
