Dana White wouldn’t ‘disrespect’ Stipe Miocic with UFC 295 interim title offer after Jon Jones’ injury

LAS VEGAS – In a surprising turn of events for UFC 295, UFC CEO Dana White has revealed that Stipe Miocic was never in consideration to remain on the card after Jon Jones withdrew due to injury.

The main event of the 30th anniversary show, scheduled for November 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York, has been derailed following Jones’ announcement of a torn pectoral tendon. The injury requires surgery, forcing him to withdraw from the heavyweight title fight against Miocic.

In response, the promotion wasted no time in booking an interim title matchup between Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall. However, this decision left many wondering about the future of the heavyweight division and why Miocic wasn’t part of the interim title bout.

During a press conference, White explained the situation and expressed his disappointment in Miocic not being involved in the interim title fight. He emphasized that the Jones vs. Miocic matchup was a legendary fight and a legacy moment for both fighters.

White revealed that Jones’ recovery timeline is expected to be at least eight months, depending on the success of his surgery. The focus currently is on Jones’ health and future in the octagon.

While an interim title is being introduced with Pavlovich vs. Aspinall, White stressed that rescheduling the fight between Jones and Miocic remains a priority for the UFC. He acknowledged the unfortunate situation for Miocic, who has not fought since March 2021 and is already 41 years old.

Despite the setback, White declared that this fight makes sense for both fighters, especially in terms of their legacies. He highlighted the significance of Jones competing in the heavyweight division and the opportunity for Miocic to regain the title. Although Miocic is understandably upset, White emphasized that it’s a situation that no one can control.

Once Jones is fully recovered, the UFC intends to proceed with the Jones vs. Miocic fight. Until then, plans will be put on hold.
