Chad Kelly throws TD pass, scores two-point convert to rally Toronto Argonauts past Ottawa Redblacks

TORONTO — Chad Kelly and the Toronto Argonauts have found their home field advantage to be unbeatable. Kelly’s touchdown pass and two-point conversion in the third quarter led Toronto to a 40-27 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday night. The Argos, with a 9-0 home record, are the first team since 1997 to remain undefeated at home.

“Playing at BMO Field is truly special,” said Kelly. “There’s nothing quite like it, especially at night in Toronto.

“Every time our fans show up, it feels like an incredible atmosphere. We’re here to entertain them and put on a show.”

Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie emphasized the importance of winning at home during training camp.

“I told the team that if we win every home game, we should make it to the playoffs,” said Dinwiddie. “We want to keep our fans excited and engaged.

“I’m proud of our players for their hard-fought victory. They showed up when it mattered.”

Kelly’s touchdown pass to DaVaris Daniels and his subsequent two-point conversion gave Toronto a 34-27 lead. Toronto’s defence also came alive in the second half, recording nine sacks and recovering a crucial fumble.

“At halftime, defensive coordinator Corey Mace challenged the team to perform better,” explained Dinwiddie. “Winning teams find a way to come out on top, even in tough situations.

“Our record speaks for itself. We’re not playing for anything specific, but we don’t want to lose our momentum going into the playoffs. Overall, all three phases of the game played well in the second half.”

The game had no playoff implications since Toronto had already secured first place in the East Division, while Ottawa had been eliminated from contention. Toronto improved to 9-0 within the division and 14-2 overall.

The Argos will face the Saskatchewan Roughriders next week before wrapping up their regular season in Ottawa on October 28.

“Our goal is to win in Saskatchewan, but we’ll see how things unfold,” said Dinwiddie. “We have talented backups who can step up and contribute.

“Chad Kelly will continue to play, but we also want to avoid any rustiness heading into the playoffs.”

Ottawa suffered its third consecutive loss, leaving their record at 4-13. They are winless in the East and on the road. The Redblacks will have a bye week before hosting Toronto.

“We need to put together a complete game for four quarters,” said Ottawa head coach Bob Dyce. “That’s the key, and we need all three phases of the game to perform at their best.

“Playing only one half is not enough, and we can’t afford turnovers like we had today.”

Despite the challenges, Dyce has faith in his team’s potential.

“We have the talent, but we need everyone to contribute for the entire 60 minutes,” he said. “We’re not there yet, but there’s a foundation for a strong team here. We’ll regroup during the bye week and aim to defeat the Argos when they visit Ottawa.”

Toronto’s next home game will be the East Division final on November 11, either against Hamilton or Montreal.

Stats: Kelly was 18-of-28 passing for 287 yards with one touchdown, while rushing for 45 yards. On the other hand, Ottawa’s Crum finished with 13-of-16 passing for 183 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
