Annika Sorenstam expresses surprise and great honor upon receiving an invitation to join Augusta National Golf Club, famous for hosting the Masters Tournament. As the first female professional golfer to be admitted to the renowned club in Augusta, Georgia, Sorenstam is thrilled by the opportunity. The 53-year-old Sorenstam states, “It was one of the happiest days of my golf life” and is excited to not only play the course but also to get to know the other members. Sorenstam joins a prestigious group of female members which includes Condoleezza Rice, Darla Moore, Ginni Rometty, Diana Murphy, Ana Patricia Botin, and Heidi Ueberroth.
During a promotional call for her LPGA event, The ANNIKA, as well as the launch of “Parity Week by Gainbridge,” Annika Sorenstam expresses her surprise at the invitation while acknowledging the significant honor. The Parity Week celebration, centered around three flagship sporting events, is hosted by women’s sports pioneers, including Sorenstam, Billie Jean King, and Lyn St. James. The events will feature 180 female athletes competing for nearly $13 million in total prize money, all sponsored by Gainbridge. The initiative aims to close the gender income and opportunity gap in professional sports. Sorenstam commends Gainbridge for creating this unique platform, emphasizing the timeliness and significance of the event.
Billie Jean King expresses her hope that Augusta National will one day host an LPGA event or women’s major tournament, in addition to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She acknowledges Sorenstam’s influential role and praises her achievements. King playfully adds, “No pressure,” while acknowledging the hard work that awaits Sorenstam as she familiarizes herself with the club and its members. This week, the dedication of these three pioneers in advancing women’s sports is being celebrated.
