An Exclusive Interview with Arizona’s Rising Star, Caleb Love: Unraveling his Journey through 5 Insightful Questions

Experience a new chapter with Caleb Love as he transitions from North Carolina to Arizona, where he will take center stage in the backcourt. I had the opportunity to catch up with Love in Tucson and discuss his decision to join Arizona, the challenges he faced at North Carolina, and much more.

Jon Rothstein: Reflecting back to a year ago, how would you have reacted if you were told that you would be playing for Arizona in the 2023-24 season?

Caleb Love: I would have thought they were crazy (laughs). I feel incredibly grateful to be here. The team, the coaches, they welcomed me with open arms as soon as I arrived.

Rothstein: Initially, you committed to Michigan as a transfer during the offseason. What ultimately drew you to Arizona?

Love: The style of play. It’s fast-paced and the spacing on the court is excellent. There are talented players in every position on this team. We have Pelle (Larsson) on the wing, Keshad (Johnson), Kylan Boswell, and Jaden Bradley as point guards. And our bigs, Oumar (Ballo) and Motiejus Krivas, are phenomenal. But beyond the style of play, it’s the culture that Coach (Tommy) Lloyd is building here that truly stands out. The team chemistry and camaraderie are remarkable, and I believe this is the perfect place for me.

Rothstein: Why do you think things didn’t go as planned during your time at North Carolina, especially after coming so close to winning the national title in 2022?

Love: I think we became complacent. After reaching the national title game, we didn’t have the same drive and connection as a team. It wasn’t just one player or coach; it was a collective issue. Throughout the season, we tried various strategies to get back on track. We had a four-game losing streak early on, and despite making some changes, we couldn’t find our footing. Everything happens for a reason, and it was simply time for me to move on.

Rothstein: At a place like North Carolina, every possession is scrutinized. You, in particular, faced criticism for your shot selection. How does that motivate you for the upcoming season at Arizona?

Love: I want to showcase not only my skills as a player but also who I am as a person. I have flaws like everyone else. Did I make some bad decisions and take questionable shots? Absolutely. I’m only human. However, within this system, I don’t feel the need to take bad shots. I know my teammates will look for me, and I’ll do the same for them. This year, I look forward to being myself, embracing my strengths, and truly coming into my own.

Rothstein: What do you believe you’ll be able to demonstrate at Arizona that you couldn’t before?

Love: I believe I can showcase the leadership qualities that I possess. During my three years in college, I wasn’t able to fully express my leadership because Coach (Hubert) Davis made Armando (Bacot) the focal point and team leader. I accepted that role, but with this group at Arizona, there are a lot of younger guys who can benefit from my guidance. I want to ensure that our season goes according to plan.
