Amanda Anisimova seemingly set for 2024 return, enters Hobart International and Australian Open with protected ranking

Keen observers of American tennis star Amanda Anisimova will have noticed her return to the gym and training in recent days, signaling a possible comeback.

According to tennis journalist Stephanie Myles (@OpenCourt) on Twitter, Anisimova has registered for both the Australian Open and the Hobart International tournament in January.

Scheduled for January 8-13, 2024, Anisimova’s participation in the Hobart International marks the beginning of her return to the sport. However, as noted by Stephanie Myles, it is still uncertain whether she will actually compete.

Unexpected Return

For fans of the young American, this news comes as a pleasant surprise following her decision to take a break from the tour due to mental health concerns. This break followed her public sharing of disparaging comments about her body that she had received on social media, which she found intolerable.

Afterward, she enrolled as a student at Nova Southeastern University just last August, seemingly indicating that a return to the court was not on the immediate horizon.

However, the former World No.21, who is only 22 years old, is at least contemplating a comeback. Anisimova gained recognition for defeating Petra Kvitova at the age of 16 in 2018 and achieving titles in 2019 and 2022 in Bogota and Melbourne at the ages of 17 and 20, respectively.

She also had notable tournament runs, including a semifinal appearance at the French Open, quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open twice, including last year. Her highest ranking of 21st was achieved in 2019.

Anisimova’s potential return comes at a time when she, along with others like Garbine Muguruza, was among the first to prioritize her mental health and step away from the sport due to the toll of the tour. While Muguruza seems to be enjoying her time away from tennis, Anisimova appears to be gearing up for a possible comeback.
