All set for inaugural golf tourney

The Johor Open 2023 is set to bring a major boost to golf in Johor state as it will be held at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in Johor Baru from Nov 14 to 16, welcoming both amateur male and female players.

Prior to the tournament, there will be a practice round the day before the official start.

The Johor Golf Association, the event’s organizer, expressed their delight in hosting this significant tournament, and are optimistic about its potential to become a successful annual event. The association reported that over 100 players have already registered within just two weeks of announcing the tournament in October.

The event has garnered support from the Johor government and is co-sponsored by Mah Sing Group, Ancom Bhd, and Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club. Sanctioned by the Malaysia Golf Association and recognized by the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) as a points system event, the Johor Open 2023 aims to attract elite amateur players to Johor and provide a platform for them to enhance their skills.

Emphasizing the developmental aspect, the association hopes that this championship, played over 54 holes, will not only elevate golf tourism in Johor but also provide a stage for amateur and junior players to hone their talents.

The tournament is open to amateur players with a handicap index of 15.9 for men and 21.6 for women as of September 1, 2023. Players without an official handicap can still join the competition but are only eligible to participate in the gross event with the approval of the organizing committee.

There will be a cut-off after 36 holes if the field is limited to 120 competitors on a first-come, first-served basis. The top 60% (gross) and ties will advance to the third and final round. The rules of play will be in accordance with the Rules of Golf as approved by R&A Rules Limited and the local rules as approved by the tournament committee.

Entry to the event is RM350 for Malaysians and RM450 for foreign players, covering green fees, goodie bag, buggy, caddie, daily breakfast, and prize presentation lunch.
