Alfa Romeo’s six-year title sponsorship deal with the Sauber team came to an end at the recent Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Following the conclusion of their successful partnership, there were talks about a potential collaboration with Haas, but negotiations did not progress. Alfa Romeo’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, has disclosed that the company is determined to continue its presence in motorsport by moving to the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
Imparato expressed that Alfa Romeo wasn’t interested in replicating the same kind of sponsorship as with Sauber, as they wanted to be part of a new and unique story. As a result, the focus shifted to WEC, a world in which Alfa Romeo has had remarkable experiences. However, no final decision has been made regarding their entry into WEC, as they are currently evaluating the most cost-efficient approach.
Imparato highlighted the importance of understanding the investment necessary to aim for the highest goals in WEC, referencing the uncontrolled cost escalation in LMP1 that ultimately caused setbacks. Additionally, a possible partnership with Peugeot, part of the same Stellantis group, is being considered, although nothing has been confirmed at this time.
Despite the premature end of Alfa Romeo’s F1 sponsorship with Sauber due to the team’s takeover by Audi, Imparato expressed no regrets, emphasizing the incredible return on investment and the extraordinary relationship they had with the team for six years.
