Ozzie Guillén says Craig Counsell is not an upgrade for the Cubs originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Experts are divided on the recent hiring of Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell.
Ozzie Guillén joined the conversation on 670 The Score’s “Mully and Haugh Show” and did not mince words when asked about Counsell’s potential to outperform David Ross.
Guillén firmly stated, “Nope. If you don’t have a ring on your finger, you’re nobody. You can be Manager of the Year [this year], and next year, you can be fired.”
He expressed shock at the decision to replace Ross, praising the former manager’s rapport with players and his ability to exceed expectations. Guillén then cautiously acknowledged that Counsell is now in a high-pressure position to deliver results for the Cubs.
Guillén credited Counsell for his success in Milwaukee and recognized the challenge of transitioning to a major market like Chicago. He also emphasized the time it will take for players to adapt to a new coaching style and for Counsell to adjust to the team.
“It really, really shocked me. But like I’ve said, baseball is not a game anymore, it’s a business. It’s about winning, make some money. But I was really, really, really shocked.”
