Yankees, Yerry De Los Santos Agree To Deal

The New York Yankees have reached a deal with pitcher Yerry De Los Santos, as announced by his representatives at Epitome Sports Management on Instagram. Although the specific terms were not disclosed, it is likely a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

De Los Santos recently became a free agent after going unclaimed on waivers, ending his long-standing tenure with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The right-handed pitcher initially signed with Pittsburgh as an amateur in 2014 and made his MLB debut eight years later, pitching 25 2/3 innings with a 4.91 ERA as a rookie. He continued with a similar workload the following season, recording 24 1/3 frames over 26 appearances.

At 25 years old (turning 26 next month), De Los Santos achieved a 3.33 ERA with the Pirates this year. While this may seem impressive, his strikeout and walk numbers were less than stellar, with a 12.5% walk rate and a below-average 17.3% strikeout rate. Even in Triple-A, he struggled with a 6.12 ERA over 25 innings.

Despite these stats, the Yankees view De Los Santos as a valuable addition, especially considering that they prioritize ground-ball pitchers in the late innings. With a sinker averaging 95 MPH and a ground-ball rate of over 53%, De Los Santos fits the mold of what the Yankees are looking for. In addition, he still has two minor league options remaining, giving the team flexibility to move him between the MLB roster and Triple-A without exposing him to waivers.
