Yankees’ Aaron Boone to SNY on new Mets manager Carlos Mendoza: ‘He’s the complete package’

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Aaron Boone was passionately supporting his friend Carlos Mendoza‘s quest for a managerial job, showcasing the loyalty between them.

However, Boone was also well aware of the tremendous loss he would experience with Mendoza leaving as his bench coach. The bond between them is so strong that Boone considers Mendoza a “brother.”

In a telephone interview with SNY on Monday evening, Boone expressed his admiration for Mendoza, as he sought to shed light on what Mets fans can expect from the relatively unknown manager-to-be.

Boone’s endorsement of Mendoza went beyond the usual compliments and reached a fervent level. He described his former bench coach as the complete package – intelligent, tenacious, well-prepared, and hardworking. Furthermore, he emphasized Mendoza’s loyalty, mentioning his strong family bonds and unwavering support.

“He has grown immensely in this role and truly deserves this opportunity,” Boone praised. “I sensed that he would be considered for a managerial position due to his exceptional qualities.”

Addressing a rumored claim that Mendoza would push back on ideas from front office staff and analysts, Boone confirmed his strength and confidence. However, he also praised Mendoza’s open-mindedness and awareness of the game, highlighting his ability to engage in fruitful debates without claiming to have all the answers.

Next, Boone was asked about what the Yankees will lose without Mendoza.

“I am losing all of that,” Boone lamented. “I’m losing a great baseball mind and an extraordinary friend. We have an unparalleled level of communication and trust on the bench. Although we don’t always agree, our ability to effectively communicate sets us apart. Losing him means losing someone I completely rely on. We have shared countless experiences, and he has become like a brother to me.”

And now, they will have to compete against each other?

“We share a city,” Boone acknowledged. “And hopefully, we will meet in October.”

Meanwhile, at the GM meetings, prominent Yankee staffers, including Boone, held two separate emotions: happiness for Mendoza and sadness over his departure.

“He is a true baseball lifer,” said player development head Kevin Reese. “His extensive knowledge of the evolving game is remarkable. He fearlessly holds people accountable, which is crucial for a successful manager. He sets standards, a characteristic he showcased while working under Mark Newman in player development with the Yankees.”

Another high-ranking Yankees official summed it up more bluntly.

“F—,” he exclaimed. “That’s a significant loss.”
