Professional golfer Xander Schauffele has made headlines by rejecting multi-million dollar offers from LIV Golf and choosing to stay with the PGA Tour.
However, his dissatisfaction with the PGA Tour’s leadership under Commissioner Jay Monahan is evident.
During an exclusive interview with Today’s Golfer, Schauffele expressed his desire for a change in leadership.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing some new leadership take place on our circuit,” Schauffele said. “I would be lying if I said that I have a whole lot of trust after what happened. That’s definitely the consensus that I get when I talk to a lot of guys. It’s a bit contradictory when they call it ‘our Tour’ and things can happen without us even knowing.”
Schauffele and other PGA Tour stars have voiced their displeasure with being kept in the dark about the significant deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).
He stated, “It’s hard. I’m sure there are reasons for what happened, but at the same time, it puts us in a really hard spot to trust the leadership that did some stuff in the dark and is supposed to have our best interests at heart. It’s a bit sicky, and I am a bit in the dark still. I hate to sit here and hope for the best.”
The supposed player-run organization left its players out of the loop, as pointed out by Scottie Scheffler earlier this summer.
The tension between players and leadership led to Tiger Woods joining the Player Advisory Board to give players equal say. However, fellow tour star Rory McIlroy recently resigned from the board.
The PGA Tour’s expected deal with the Saudi PIF is still pending. Despite an initial deadline set for the end of 2023, recent updates indicate that it may take longer.
Nevertheless, players like Schauffele have not forgotten about being deceived by their leadership.
