Woods-McIlroy virtual golf venue damaged in roof collapse

The highly anticipated launch of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s simulator golf league faces potential delays following an unexpected power outage that resulted in deflation and damage to the air-supported dome section of the Florida-based venue, TGL revealed on Wednesday.

No injuries were reported, and there was no impact on the technology inside the Palm Beach Gardens arena, where 24 PGA Tour players are set to compete in match play using a simulator screen and an adjustable putting surface beginning on Jan. 9, during prime time.

“Given the current circumstances, it is premature to assess the impact on our schedules as we evaluate the extent of the damage,” TGL stated in an email sent to Reuters.

The SoFi Center, located on the Palm Beach State College campus, boasts a nearly 250,000-square-foot venue with a 75-foot-high apex, designed to accommodate approximately 1,600 people on match nights during TGL’s inaugural season.

The course within the venue will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, covering an area approximately the size of an American football field.

Announced in August 2022, TGL is a television-oriented golf league developed by Woods and McIlroy’s TMRW Sports venture, with both golfers committing to participate in the league.

TGL will showcase six four-player teams consisting of PGA Tour players, including top names such as Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, and Xander Schauffele.
