LAS VEGAS – Jake Matthews is keen on a chance to compete against a top 15 contender in the UFC’s welterweight division, expressing confidence that a victory in his next bout will pave the way for that opportunity.
Matthews is set to step back into the octagon this weekend, participating in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 232. The Australian fighter, Matthews (19-6 MMA, 12-6 UFC), will face Michael Morales, an undefeated prospect in the welterweight division with a record of 15-0 MMA and 3-0 UFC. Matthews believes that a victory on Saturday will bring him an opportunity to take on a ranked opponent in his next fight.
Speaking to reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 232 media day, Matthews said, “It’s the kind of fight where one of us is going to go on and fight a ranked opponent next, 100 percent. I’ve been in this situation a number of times throughout my career, so I know how to deal with it. If we get the win this weekend, I’m going to sit and wait for a ranked guy to accept.”
“It’s definitely going to be a striking-heavy fight. We’re both primarily boxers. It’s whoever can implement their game plan,” Matthews added when discussing the fight against Morales, noting the likelihood of a standup war and his belief that his experience will prove to be advantageous.
