The Minnesota Wild made waves by acquiring veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a trade. This move came shortly after a separate deal that saw the exchange of defenseman Calen Addison to the San Jose Sharks.
As part of the trade for Bogosian, the Wild sent a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Lightning. Bogosian, a 16-year veteran of the NHL and on his fifth franchise, adds experience to the Wild’s defensive line. Additionally, the Wild traded Addison to the league-worst Sharks (1-10-1) for right wing Adam Raska and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick.
The Lightning, by trading Bogosian, cleared $850,000 in salary cap space. This also allowed them to receive an asset they wouldn’t have if he were claimed by another club when he was placed on waivers last month. With Bogosian not playing regularly, this trade benefits both parties.
Minnesota’s move to acquire Bogosian indicates a push for improved defensive capabilities. With the team struggling in goals allowed per game, the addition of a veteran like Bogosian is expected to bolster the team’s defense.
Wild general manager Bill Guerin expressed that the acquisition of Bogosian comes as a way to address the team’s need for more grit and size in their defensive pairing. He also mentioned that Addison, although a good player, may benefit from the change of scenery and the opportunity to succeed elsewhere.
The 23-year-old Addison was acquired by the Wild in 2020 in a trade with Pittsburgh, where he spent some time before joining the Wild. With his departure, the Wild look ahead to the future while welcoming Bogosian to the team.
