After their 34-13 loss to the Dolphins on Black Friday, it’s clear that the Jets’ season is over. Aaron Rodgers’ injury at the start of the season dashed any Super Bowl hopes, but it’s also apparent that this team would have struggled regardless of Rodgers’ health.
The offense has proven to be lackluster, and the adjustments made to accommodate Rodgers have rendered it unwatchable. General manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh may escape scrutiny due to Rodgers’ absence, but the supporting cast has disintegrated.
Several key players tied to Rodgers, including Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Dalvin Cook, Nate Hackett, and Billy Turner, have failed to contribute, resulting in the team’s decline.
“I’ll speak for him,” Saleh remarked, addressing Lazard’s absence, “I don’t think he’s played up to his standard, and there’s parts of his game that need to get better.”
Cook has underperformed, Hackett has failed to fill the void left by Rodgers, and Turner has struggled to hold the offensive line. These underperforming elements have left the Jets 0 for 5 on their moves.
Furthermore, the Jets have substantial obstacles on the offensive end, including a lack of depth in the offensive line and struggling run game, despite having a strong running back in Breece Hall.
Despite an elite defense, the Jets have failed to make the most of it due to their faltering offense. The defense’s capabilities have been overshadowed by the offensive inadequacies, which have resulted in squandered money and draft picks.
Looking ahead, the team’s prospects may improve if Rodgers can make a full recovery. However, the Jets must reevaluate Rodgers’ influence to prevent further damage to the team’s performance.
If a playoff run in 2024 is to become a reality, the Jets must rethink their approach and resist bending to Rodgers’ desires if they hope to build a competitive NFL team. Change is necessary to alter the current trajectory and lead the team to future success.
