Despite their limited success, every team that has eliminated them from the playoffs has advanced to the World Series. This streak includes the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks. Six out of the eight previous teams eventually won the World Series, with only the 2018 Dodgers and 1981 Yankees falling short.

The 84-win Diamondbacks team is undoubtedly an unexpected contender after their victory over the Brewers. However, the 2019 Nationals may be even more peculiar. They defeated the Brewers in a one-game playoff, relying on Brewers’ outfielder Trent Grisham’s crucial error that allowed them to take the lead. This occurred as star right fielder Christian Yelich, the reigning NL MVP, was injured. In addition to this stroke of luck, the Nationals’ success hinged on the relief appearance of starter Stephen Strasburg and the NL Cy Young-winning starter Max Scherzer giving up three runs in five innings. Yet, despite these odds, the Nationals reached the World Series with relative ease, sweeping the NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals and eventually winning the championship in seven games against the Houston Astros. Interestingly, the World Series featured the visiting team winning every game, a rare occurrence that previously only transpired in the 2023 ALCS.
