Why Newcastle’s Howe Criticizes ‘Unfair PSG Penalty Decision’

Referee Szymon Marciniak, who officiated the 2022 World Cup Final, awarded the penalty after VAR intervened when the ball struck the arm of Newcastle defender Tino Livramento following Ousmane Dembélé’s cross. Despite initially hitting Livramento’s chest, Marciniak pointed to the spot after reviewing the incident at the VAR monitor.

Howe criticized the decision as a “poor” one but stressed the importance of maintaining belief in qualifying for the round of 16, saying, “Yes I do,” in response to a question about a sense of injustice. He pointed out that although the decision seemed unfair, losing control over reactions wouldn’t be productive.

Following the match, Newcastle still has a chance to qualify if they beat AC Milan at St James’ Park and PSG fails to win against Group F leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Despite the disappointment, Howe highlighted the players’ committed performances and the positives they can take from the experience of playing in Paris. He emphasized the need to focus on the team’s strengths rather than dwell on the negatives.

Mbappé, on the other hand, admitted that PSG should have won the game, feeling frustrated about missing multiple opportunities to secure a victory despite creating 31 shots during the match.

In essence, the game was marred by controversies and missed opportunities, leaving both teams with mixed emotions. However, Newcastle is still holding onto hope as they prepare for the final match of the group stage.
