Earlier this month, the Celtics decided to

hire Van Gundy
. After being part of ESPN/ABC’s top NBA broadcast team for many years, Van Gundy was let go by the network over the summer.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla recently

expressed during an interview
with 98.5 The Sports Hub show Zolak & Bertrand why Van Gundy’s involvement could be instrumental to the Celtics’ success.

Mazzulla said, “It’s really cool because he has an unbiased perspective toward our organization. As the season progresses, it becomes challenging to maintain an objective viewpoint. When you’re working closely with players every day, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Van Gundy, who’s studying us and scouting the team, brings an unbiased perspective. He identifies our strengths, weaknesses, and provides valuable insights. In my opinion, having him as a resource is a major asset.”

Having an external perspective to evaluate all aspects of the organization, including the Maine Celtics of the G-League, is always valuable. Mazzulla makes a valid point about the difficulty of maintaining objectivity when immersed in the day-to-day operations.

Van Gundy’s wealth of experience as a successful head coach at both college and NBA levels will serve as a great asset for the Celtics. He has worked with superstars, players with egos, and different teams with contrasting styles. As part of ESPN/ABC’s No. 1 broadcast team for many years, he has witnessed elite basketball firsthand.
