Who’s staying and who’s going?

The WNBA offseason is in full swing, and some Liberty players are gearing up for their overseas commitments during the winter.

China has become a popular destination again after the country lifted its COVID-19 restrictions. Unfortunately, the Israel women’s basketball league has suspended play due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Additionally, no Liberty players expressed interest in playing in Russia, given the country’s conflict with Ukraine and recent incident involving Brittney Griner.

Let’s take a look at the offseason plans of the Liberty players following their run to the WNBA finals:

WHO’S GOING

Center Jonquel Jones has already made her plans clear for the offseason. She will be playing in China, although the specific team is yet to be confirmed.

Forward Nyara Sabally has joined EuroLeague team ZVVZ USK Praha in the Czech Republic. She had a solid debut performance in her first EuroLeague game.

Guard Jocelyn Willoughby will be suiting up for the Women’s National Basketball League’s Adelaide Lightning in Australia. She previously played for the Sydney Flame.

Marine Johannes will continue her contract with EuroLeague team Lyon ASVEL Féminin in France. She had an exceptional season last year, winning both the Ligue Féminine and EuroCup Championships.

Chinese center Han Xu will be staying home to play for Sichuan Yuanda in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. She aims to defend their title after a successful season.

ON THE FENCE

Star player Breanna Stewart is undecided about her plans and the rumors of her playing in China are unconfirmed.

Stewart is currently expecting her second child and will make a decision regarding her future once her family settles in.

Kayla Thornton and Stefanie Dolson have yet to announce their plans for the offseason.

STAYING HOME

Sabrina Ionescu will be staying home and working with USA Basketball.

Courtney Vandersloot, who has been in the league for 13 years, will finally enjoy a full WNBA offseason. However, she remains open to potential offers from overseas teams.

Betnijah Laney has decided not to play overseas and will focus on resting and recovering her body after a history of injuries.
