White Sox trade Aaron Bummer to the Atlanta Braves originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Atlanta Braves have acquired left-handed pitcher Aaron Bummer from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for a package of players, including pitchers Mike Soroka, Jared Shuster, and Riley Gowens, as well as infielders Nicky Lopez and Braden Shewmake. This significant trade was announced by the team on Thursday night.
Bummer has long been the subject of trade rumors, with the White Sox ultimately deciding to part ways with the 30-year-old pitcher. The talented player was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 19th round of the 2014 MLB draft and has spent the last seven seasons with the team.
One of the key players joining the White Sox as part of the trade is Nicky Lopez, an Illinois native who grew up in Naperville. Lopez, 29, has a career batting average of .249 and has previously played for the Kansas City Royals and the Braves.
Meanwhile, Mike Soroka, a 25-year-old one-time All-Star, has spent his entire career with the Braves. He missed the last two seasons due to injury but previously finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2019.
Braden Shewmake, a former No. 21 overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft, brings his minor league experience to the White Sox, boasting a career batting average of .250 and 38 home runs in the Atlanta system. Riley Gowens and Jared Shuster, both young pitchers, have also been part of the trade, adding depth to the White Sox roster.
Chris Getz, the White Sox general manager, has made a bold move with this trade, signaling his intentions to reshape the team. This trade comes on the heels of Getz’s decision to decline club options for Tim Anderson and Liam Hendriks.
