The Chicago White Sox made a significant roster move by declining the $15 million club option on reliever Liam Hendriks. This decision was one of four moves announced by the Sox on Friday.
Starter Mike Clevinger also declined his $12 million mutual option, while outfielders Clint Frazier and Trayce Thompson were outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte.
Hendriks’ contract included a $15 million buyout to be paid in 10 installments from 2024-33. Despite the decline of his option, Hendriks expressed his desire to return, stating his commitment to winning with the team.
Hendriks was a major addition to the team in the 2021 season, earning All-Star honors and leading the American League with 38 saves. In the following season, he again gained All-Star recognition and had 37 saves. However, his journey was marked by a personal struggle as he battled and overcame non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
After defeating cancer, Hendriks made an emotional return to the big leagues, receiving standing ovations and universal support. Unfortunately, his comeback was cut short due to Tommy John surgery, and he is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2024 season.
Despite the challenges, Hendriks was recognized for his inspirational journey, earning the American League Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2023.
In addition to Hendriks, the Sox made moves involving other players. Clevinger, who had a strong season as a starter, signed a one-year deal in December. Thompson rejoined the Sox through a trade, while Frazier also had a stint with the team.
The Sox now have a decision to make regarding shortstop Tim Anderson’s $14 million club option for 2024.
With these roster moves, the Sox have altered their lineup and set the stage for the upcoming season.
