Westmont Hilltop edges Central Cambria for ‘unexpected’ District 6 Class 2A girls team tennis title

On Oct. 12, the Westmont Hilltop girls tennis team achieved a remarkable victory by defeating the favored Central team on their home court. This unexpected triumph was followed by another impressive win over top-seeded Central Cambria, allowing Westmont Hilltop to reclaim the District 6 Class 2A team title. Senior Beth Buettner expressed her excitement and pride in her team’s performance, emphasizing their resilience and determination. The Hilltoppers’ journey to the finals was uncertain after some tough losses, but they rallied together and defied expectations.

The match between the Hilltoppers and the Red Devils marked the ninth consecutive season they met in the District 6 Class 2A team championship. With this win, Westmont Hilltop now holds a 5-4 lead in their head-to-head record, having previously won titles in 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021.

This victory came as a surprise to the Westmont Hilltop seniors, including Olivia Berish, who admitted they did not anticipate emerging as the winners. However, they were immensely proud of their team’s efforts and resilience. Central Cambria had previously defeated Westmont Hilltop 3-2 on Oct. 5, but a crucial match swung in the Hilltoppers’ favor, leading to their victory in the tight rivalry between the two teams.

While disappointed with the outcome, Central Cambria coach Kim Cavalier acknowledged Westmont Hilltop’s toughness and commended their performance. Central Cambria had an exceptional season, having won team crowns in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022.

Looking ahead, Westmont Hilltop will face the District 3 runner-up in the first round of the PIAA tournament on Oct. 24. The details regarding the location and time of the match are yet to be announced.

Despite Central Cambria’s initial success in the singles matches, Westmont Hilltop managed to turn the tables with victories in the doubles category. The performance of junior Lyza Johnson and freshman Isabella Parrish in No. 1 doubles, as well as the combination of sophomore Caridy Arnold and junior Ashley Gregorchik in second doubles, played a crucial role in securing the championship for Westmont Hilltop.

Coach Dan Fregly expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, acknowledging the impact of their previous victory over Central. He praised the play of Buettner and Hong, who won their singles matches convincingly, and highlighted the unpredictable nature of the sport.

Arnold and Gregorchik’s improvement throughout the season was also noted as a crucial factor in the team’s success. Finding the right pairing in the second doubles was a challenge, but they managed to come together as a cohesive unit at the opportune moment.

Both teams share a respectful rivalry, with Cavalier emphasizing her admiration for Fregly and his team. She appreciates the competitive back-and-forth between their teams and admires the character and skill of Westmont Hilltop players.
