Westlake High girls tennis team captures CIF-SS Open Division championship

The victorious Westlake High girls tennis team put dedication and passion into their journey.

“I have my three thoroughbreds at the top and I didn’t deviate from that,” mentioned head coach Scott Yasgoor. The Westlake High girls tennis team clinched the CIF-Southern Section Open Division championship after a sensational performance in a tiebreaker against Mater Dei, resulting in a 9-9 tie on Friday morning at Pomona-Pitzer College in Claremont. The win was secured in their favor, as the Warriors triumphed on total games, 82-80, delivered by No. 1 singles Lian, a UC San Diego commit.

After a fierce game, officials checked and double checked the math before confirming the Warriors’ victory.

With the championship title in hand, the Warriors have solidified their reign in the Open Division, having previously won the title twice in the last three seasons. They also emerged victoriously in two of the last three CIF-State regional championships. Their triumph also avenged the loss they suffered at the hands of Mater Dei a year ago in the quarterfinals.

Seniors Allison Lian, Ariana Liu, and Megan Sun emerged as key players, contributing significantly to the team’s win. The University of Chicago commit, Liu, delivered a pivotal performance at No. 2 singles, sweeping her three sets. The stellar performances of Lian and Sun also added to the team’s incredible success, culminating in an epic tennis showdown.

“We’ve had a nice little run over the last couple years,” Yasgoor remarked, reflecting on the team’s recent victories and consistent success. With their current achievement, Westlake High girls tennis team now sets its sights on a third regional state title.
