Ever since Victor Wembanyama was selected as the top pick in last June’s NBA Draft, his name has been the subject of some creative pronunciation attempts and spelling mishaps across the Web.
However, the San Antonio Spurs took the misspelling of his name to a whole new level during a nationally televised game against the Warriors on Friday night. Wembanyama played the first half in a jersey with his name mistakenly spelled as “Wembanyana,” with an “N” in the wrong place.
He rectified this in the second half by wearing a jersey with his name spelled correctly.
Wembanyama expressed his disappointment at playing the first half in a jersey with his name misspelled:
“I don’t know if somebody got fired, but the Spurs did their job checking on my name. I don’t know. It’s a real shame.”

This game also provided another rare moment for Wembanyama when the 7’4″ Frenchman got his shot blocked by Gary Payton II.

The game concluded with the Warriors securing a 118-112 victory, keeping their hopes of advancing in the In Season Tournament alive.
